And I personally will fight to the death or otherwise stated to defend their honor. Also if you can find me a better radio station I will strip naked and tattoo “Neil Bung and Krazy Whorse” on my ass while allowing Ted Nugent to shoot flaming arrows at me on at every red-neck state fair in the nation.
They have the perfect format, there is none. You will hear Hot Chip followed by Flogging Molly followed by the Pixies, followed by Foals, followed by the Cure followed by Guided by Voices, followed by Talking Heads followed by Cat Power, followed by Bruce Springsteen, followed by Black Flag…and the list goes on.
Then there’s “Jonesy’s Jukebox” where you can hear the extremely stoned, extremely British, Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols playing whatever the hell he feels like playing. If you don’t live in LA or the OC check out their web broadcast here INDI 103 Oh crap…they’re playing “Morphine” right now!!!!! “I’ll throw my drugs all AWAY!! Shit They followed it up with Social Distortion! Listen to them and you will be stoked. If not, I will mail you a years supply of head cheese.
Noticing an obvious gap in the “bands I can follow around while spending my parents’ money and doing drugs and generally avoiding any responsibility or general usefulness to society” market, former lead guitarist and singer Trey Anastasio of Phish has hinted here that the band may be on the verge of reuniting.
I must confess, regrettably, that I went through a long Phish phase. I was a young, naive college student whose musical boundaries had up to that point not been tested much further than your standard alt-rock radio and classic rock fare. My willingness to step outside of my boundaries, heavily persuaded by a multitude of bong rips, led me to Phish. I became an expert on the band, purchased all of their albums, and attended four shows here in Austin.
Years later, I would sober up and realize that the band, while technically very good musicians, sucks balls if you’re sober. I still have some of their albums (too scratched up to sell to a used record store), and I have a difficult time getting past thirty seconds of any song without turning it off in disgust. While I will always have a soft spot in my formerly weed-ravaged heart for these lovable goofs and their music (the album A Picture of Nectar in particular), I just can’t stomach listening to any of their music without being stoned off my ass. That hasn’t happened in probably six or seven years, so I think it’s safe to assume that you won’t catch me flocking to any reunion concerts. Bring on the flames, hippies!
I can still listen to this one sometimes, though:
**UPDATE**Phish piano player Page McConnell has addressed these rumors himself in a letter on Phish’s website. Seems there is no reunion coming anytime soon, but possibly in the future. Sorry to add to the rumor mill, Phish phans.
Some band called The Acorn has covered Cyndi Lauper’s “Good Enough” (ridiculously better known as “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” so they could stick it in the movie, even though the song has nothing to do with the Goonies).
I’m not sure I like their take, although I’m appreciative that they didn’t do an “ironic” power-punk version like a million other bands would have done (although it could certainly work that way). Maybe you’ll like their effort better than I did.
According to the ever-reliable Wikipedia, Cyndi hates this song, exhibiting the great judgment that caused her career to tank about three seconds after “Change of Heart” left the charts–OK, actually “True Colors,” but I like that song about as much as Cyndi likes “Good Enough.”
Anyway, here’s the fine original. Sorry for the annoying Nintendo video. It had the best sound. You can find several uploads of the Goonies version with inferior sound on YouTube:
Frightened Rabbit will be playing a headlining free gig tomorrow night at the Mohawk on Red River. The show starts at 8 p.m. Be there or be somewhere else.
I caught them at the Mohawk about a month ago, and it was well worth the money. Now this one’s free, so you really have no excuse not to be there and hear some raw Scottish rock. See you at the show!
With a lot of ink being spilled over the leak of what seems to be several finished tracks from the possibly-upcoming Guns n’ Roses record (plus an FBI visit to the guy who posted them online), now seems like the appropriate time to revisit Chuck Klosterman’s excellent review of the album in Spin from awhile back.
Since I’m linking a Spin review, it only seems appropriate to include this, um, classic G n’ R tune:
Bob Guccione Jr. at Spin, what, you pissed off cuz your dad gets more pu**y than you?
(I don’t expect anyone to actually sit through this.)
