On Deaf Ears

I heard something on the radio this morning that almost made me lose my lunch, so of course I felt I had to share.  My significant other gets up every morning and turns on the radio while she makes her coffee.  She always has the radio tuned, no matter how much I complain, to 98.1 KVET, a country station here in Austin.  As country stations go, it’s better than most, since they do try to mix in a good amount of classic country with all of the new crap that’s out there these days.  However, on Sunday mornings, they broadcast some nationally syndicated Top 40 Country Countdown or something.  This is where I heard what will probably give me nightmares from this day forward.

Do you remember a band from the 1980′s called The Dream Academy?  No?  Remember their song “Life in a Northern Town?”  Doesn’t ring a bell?  Remember the laughable chorus that goes “Hey ah ma ma ma?”  Ah, now we’re on the same page.  Well, somebody decided to make a country version of this far from classic song.  Ladies and gentlemen, I give you “Life in a Northern Town” by Sugarland, with Little Big Town and Jake Owen, currently #43 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Just another example of how far “country” music has strayed from its roots.  YouTube also had a video of this same gang of “artists” covering “Pour Some Sugar on Me.”  I couldn’t bring myself to click on the link, but feel free if you want.  You’re a braver soul than me.  Warning: the audio is pretty low quality, as is the performance.
